Rent The Runway, Not Just For Gowns

I've discovered a magical loophole into the fashion universe and I can't wait to share it with all of you! My sisters had been talking A LOT about renting through Rent The Runway. Now, I didn't think much about it because like most people, I had assumed that Rent the Runway was perfect for the times you needed a fancy ball gown or something for a black tie event only. Turns out, I was wrong! My sisters are not only genius, they are always so beautifully dressed. And just about every time I compliment them, their answer to me was, "oh thanks, it's from Rent the Runway." Really??? Everyday cute stuff from RTR? Hmmm.....my investigation began.

Why Use Rent the Runway?

There are a few options if you are thinking of trying the service out. You can rent a single item OR subscribe to a monthly membership. Being so impressed with my sisters experiences, I chose to try the membership for $140 per month...I know you may be thinking that's pricey, but promise, hear me out. In a given month, I'm attending (at least) one birthday dinner or party, a few business events, date nights, etc. If you're like me, I can get bored with my clothes so easily,In this day in age we have the capability to capture so many photos and videos on our phones. We are in the age of oversharing our lives on social media. (I am included in this "we" group I speak of.) You go out with friends, attend weddings, and special life moments, post a few pics and boom! That amazing top or cool skirt will get used a few other times and then will sit in the closet to collect dust because that item has been "mentally retired".

What Do They Have?

Do yourself a favor and checkout their portfolio. They add new things daily and offer a great mix of pieces to mix and match.

  • Dresses (Formal, Daytime, Everyday)
  • Tops (Tanks, Blouses, Trend, Jackets, Sweaters/Sweatshirts)
  • Bottoms (Skirts, Pants)
  • One Pieces (Rompers, Jumpsuits)
  • Handbags & Clutches
  • Jewelry (Bracelets, Necklaces, Earrings, Rings)

Black tie formal, office chic, to casual everyday items. RTR has much more variety than I would have ever expected.

How Does It Work?

Download the app. Create an account. Scroll thru and "Heart" the items you like, add the ones you like to the shipment and checkout! So simple – it's not even funny. You receive your items in a nice garment bag hung, clean, pressed, in dry cleaning wrap. When you are ready to return the items you just put them back in the bag dirty, (say what?!?) place the prepaid return shipping label in the outside mailing slot, seal the zipper with the enclosed locks, and drop it off at the nearest shipping location. They literally make it too easy to deny. It's a lazy person's (me) dream come true! In about two days they will let you know that they got the items back and that you are free to select more to be sent your way. You can use up to 3 items at a time if you opt for the unlimited package and can now add up to two extra items for $25 each in case you have a trip or something where you'll need extra pieces.

The Big Picture

The main reason this concept is so appealing to me is the minimization of waste. We could cut down on mass production of items that go to waste by this concept of sharing clothes. Fast fashion is contributing to our landfills and I am just as guilty as the next person. If more of these concepts could catch on it would slow the production of extra clothing waste. Here is our link for Rent the Runway if you'd like to check it out.
