My Best Hair Day

I get asked about my hair a lot which I find to be the ultimate compliment. My hair and I have come a long way! Mostly self-conflicted, I have suffered my share of hair nightmares. Too many layers, color fails, over processed moments and I even had a stylist melt my hair off...the word devastating doesn't even describe. What I'm trying to say is that despite all of the crap I have done to my hair, we figured out a routine and we're in a really good place.

Wash

Let's be real, it's all about the products! I look for shampoos and conditioners with the word "hydrating" or "moisturizing". I also select products for "color treated hair". I usually have a small rotation going in my shower because I feel like my hair responds better when I change up my shampoos and conditioners from time to time.

My goal is to wash my hair two to three times a week. I try and follow an every-other-day regiment but that can vary drastically from week-to-week depending on events I have going on and my workout schedule. On the days that I go for a run, I don't wash my hair after. Sure, it's a little gross but there are things I do to help manage (cheat sheet section below).

This is my current shower lineup. All products are linked at the bottom of the post.

Dry

When possible, I let my hair air dry... less heat = healthier hair. However, there are days when a good blow out is necessary. Before blow drying, I like to blot my hair dry and twist into a drying bun, anywhere from 5 minutes on. This towel sucks the moisture from my strands like a sponge (literally) which ultimately cutting my blow dry time by half. Next thing, I spray in a leave-in hair treatment (10-12 sprays) and massage the product into my strands. I use a Wet Brush to detangle.

My hair is on the longer side so I find it's much easier (and efficient) to blow-dry when I separate it into sections (top, mid, bottom). Aside from actually drying my hair, I like to use a blow out as an opportunity to tame fly-aways and sculpt certain areas of my hair while doing it. There are different size round brushes that help so much with that.

Tip: If I have the time, I like to let my hair chill for awhile post blow-dry before styling. I have seen better, long lasting results with my curls when I do this.

Style

The fun part! After a wash and blow dry, I will almost always decide to style my hair with soft waves. Right now, I'm using my T3 Bodywaver (1.75") to obtain that look. I find that when I start with loose waves, I can easily throw a barrel curl on it the following day OR flat iron straight.

I've been really into using two products before styling my hair lately. I like to spray dry shampoo into my roots. Yes, my hair is already clean so I don't use a ton, just enough to add a little body and texture. Next, I use a very small amount of Crème For Style all over my dry hair and I brush it out, then I begin curling.

Once my hair has been styled, I let it chill. The longer I let the curls sit before shaping, the longer my style lasts. I also like to set things with hairspray. This is my 15 year go-to hairspray but I also love this one for the smell and taming fly-aways.

Cheat Sheet

On those in-between wash days, it's all about managing the grossness (or…greasiness). Dry shampoo for days. I love this one because it's tinted.

Hats, topknots, headbands! My goal is to create a diversion.

I will wash only my roots with shampoo if necessary... whatever works right?

Water or sweat... a root blow dry is a must for me in-between washes. I like how it helps preserve the style for another day or so.
